The Federal Government has commenced preparations for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary with the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) charged with the responsibility of planning, coordinating, and executing all activities approved for the historic celebration.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja, highlighted the significance of the anniversary as a moment for both reflection and renewed commitment to nation-building. He noted that despite decades of political, economic, and social challenges, Nigeria has consistently demonstrated resilience and the capacity to overcome adversity.

“This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going from here. As a nation, we have faced challenges in areas such as political, economic, and social issues but have overcome them. An anniversary is not just a celebration of the past. It is a call for action for the future. We must therefore commit ourselves to build a nation where every citizen feels valued and empowered to contribute his quota to the goals and aspirations of the country,” Akume said.

The SGF further underscored the role of patriotism and unity in sustaining national progress, urging Nigerians to embrace the celebration as a symbol of shared heritage and collective responsibility.

According to the programme released, the 65th Independence Anniversary activities will open with a World Press Conference on Thursday, 25th September 2025. This will be followed by a Juma’at Service and Women Activities on Friday, 26th September; Youth Activities and a Historical Arts Exhibition on Saturday, 27th September; a Church Service on Sunday, 28th September; and a Public Lecture on Monday, 29th September. The celebrations will climax with the Presidential Broadcast and the Independence Day Parade on Wednesday, 1st October 2025.

As part of the commemorative projects, Senator Akume also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project Workstation, an initiative of CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with the Office of the SGF. The workstation, equipped with a state-of-the-art studio, is designed for an interview-based television series featuring top government functionaries across various sectors. The series aims to highlight milestones in governance and development, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration.

The project commenced with an interview session featuring the SGF, who called on Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s progress over the past 65 years while continuing to place trust in their leaders to deliver on national aspirations.

The Nigeria @65 Compendium, when completed, is expected to serve as an authoritative reference on the nation’s developmental trajectory. It will cover the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial eras, with particular emphasis on Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the economy, the three tiers of government, the Renewed Hope Agenda, and other key sectors shaping national growth.

With these initiatives, the Federal Government has set the stage for a memorable celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, blending commemoration with vision for the country’s future.
