The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, called on Nigerians to bear arms for self-defence.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ described such reports as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the CDS’s comments during a live interview on Channels Television on Thursday, 20 August 2025.
According to the statement, General Musa only encouraged Nigerians to acquire basic survival and self-protection skills, likening them to everyday competencies such as driving, swimming, taekwondo, judo, and boxing. The Defence Headquarters stressed that at no point did he advocate unlawful possession of firearms.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CDS did not call for citizens to bear arms or to engage in unlawful possession of firearms. He is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting the unauthorized carrying of weapons. His message was intended to promote personal resilience, situational awareness and lawful preparedness—not to encourage illegal activity,” the statement clarified.
The DHQ further reassured Nigerians of the Armed Forces’ determination to sustain gains recorded in the fight against insecurity nationwide. It noted that the military, working with other security agencies, continues to achieve significant successes, reflecting the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and maintaining peace.
Brigadier General Gusau emphasized that security awareness is crucial at all levels, stressing that skills such as unarmed self-defence, swimming, and driving not only enhance individual preparedness but also contribute to national security. He urged members of the public to seek verified information and avoid spreading distorted or misleading accounts of official statements.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to the safety, security and well-being of all Nigerians,” the DHQ affirmed.
