The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has supported the call by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for high-profile individuals to observe proper security protocols when visiting any state.

Wike made the remarks during the official commissioning of the New Edo Line Transport Service in Benin City. He said such protocols are necessary to guarantee the safety of both visitors and citizens.

Referencing the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, Wike stated that he had followed due process when visiting him in Rivers State and wondered why the same courtesy was not extended to Governor Okpebholo.

“I don’t see why Peter Obi visited Edo without informing the Governor. When he visited me in Rivers, he secured a permit. These are basic security procedures,” Wike said.

He commended Governor Okpebholo for his performance in office and described the relaunch of the Edo Line as a step towards addressing transportation and security challenges in the state.

Governor Okpebholo, in his address, said his earlier comment on Peter Obi’s visit was a security advisory and not a threat. He said as the Chief Security Officer of the state, it is his responsibility to protect both residents and visitors.

“What I said was an advice, not a threat. No one should come into Edo without informing the Governor. I have a duty to secure everyone in the state,” he said.

The Governor recalled an incident during the administration of his predecessor when one of his security aides was killed during an uncoordinated visit, stressing the need for proper communication.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support to Edo State and assured that his administration would continue to deliver developmental projects across the state.

He also pledged that Edo would deliver 2.5 million votes for the President in the 2027 elections.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by former Governor of Edo State and Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Umar Musa Ikhilor; Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa; Chief of Staff, Gani Audu; former Deputy Governors, Pius Odubu and Lucky Imasuen; Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd); Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu; APC stakeholders; security agencies; market women; youth representatives; and transport sector stakeholders.
