In a strategic move to enhance the quality and integrity of police personnel in Nigeria, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, has sought the support of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in conducting drug integrity tests for new police recruits nationwide.

This initiative, aimed at ensuring that only individuals with the right mental and psychological disposition graduate from police training colleges, was the highlight of a courtesy visit by the PSC leadership to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, retired Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, at the agency’s national headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement by the Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Mr. Femi Babafemi, DIG Argungu emphasized that the PSC is committed to due process and merit-based recruitment, adding that drug screening is a critical part of that process.

“I feel there is a need to come and plead, to seek the assistance and cooperation of this organization,” he said. “If recruitment processes are compromised, the end product those trained as police officers will reflect that flaw. We must avoid putting weapons in the hands of individuals already dependent on illicit substances. That is simply dangerous.”

The PSC chairman revealed plans to decentralize the drug screening exercise to all states of the federation, noting that the widespread presence of NDLEA across Nigeria presents a perfect opportunity for collaboration.

“We are grateful for the support we’ve received so far and believe that this partnership will help us screen out candidates involved with drugs, thereby strengthening the foundation of our police force,” Argungu added.

In his response, Brigadier General Marwa (Rtd) applauded the initiative and pledged the agency’s full support. He stressed that drug abuse is not just a health crisis but a national security issue, making collaboration across sectors essential.

“Your request aligns perfectly with our mandate,” Marwa stated. “We’re fully equipped across our nationwide commands with advanced drug test kits that are capable of detecting even the most deceptive tactics used by candidates. This partnership is crucial, and we’re committed to delivering reliable and professional support.”

The collaboration is expected to mark a new chapter in the recruitment process of the Nigeria Police Force, with the goal of producing disciplined, drug-free, and mentally sound officers capable of effectively serving the nation.
