Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security cooperation following a high-level visit by the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Anderson, to Abuja from 8 to 9 February.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the visit underscored the shared resolve of both countries to advance collaboration in addressing evolving security challenges and countering terrorist organisations that threaten Nigeria, the United States, the West African region, and global peace.

During the visit, General Anderson paid courtesy calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and held strategic engagements with the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence; the Chief of Defence Staff; the Chief of Army Staff; and other senior military and security officials. Discussions focused on shared security interests, counter-terrorism efforts, and the broader Nigeria–United States defence partnership.
The engagements also highlighted opportunities for enhanced military training and capacity building, with both sides laying the groundwork for future force development initiatives, real-world training opportunities, joint exercises, and the deployment of specialised capabilities that the United States can provide in support of Nigeria’s security objectives.
As part of the visit, General Anderson toured the joint United States–Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, a key platform that strengthens Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. The fusion cell plays a critical role in building enduring capacity and enabling real-time operational outcomes against security threats.

While interacting with senior Nigerian security officials, the AFRICOM Commander reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigerian-led solutions through sustained intelligence sharing and technical advisory support aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s independent operational capability.
The visit marks another significant step in the long-standing defence relationship between Nigeria and the United States, anchored on mutual respect, shared values, and a common goal of promoting regional and global security.
