The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Wadi Shaibu, has reiterated that strong leadership and continuous training remain the foundation of the Nigerian Army’s operational efficiency in confronting evolving security challenges nationwide.
He stated this on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, during an operational tour of the 1 Division Area of Responsibility in Kaduna. The visit was announced in a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele.
During an operational briefing and subsequent address to officers at the Division Auditorium, the COAS stressed that effective leadership is the most decisive component in combating insecurity. He urged officers to uphold exemplary conduct and provide the guidance and confidence their soldiers need in the field.
Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasised that leading troops in battle is a non-negotiable duty of every officer, calling for unwavering dedication, loyalty and purposeful leadership both in and outside operational environments. Addressing soldiers on parade, he further charged them to trust and obey their commanders, adding that discipline, loyalty and commitment are indispensable to the successful execution of military responsibilities.
The Army Chief also underscored the critical role of training in enhancing professionalism, describing it as the “best gift” the Army offers its personnel. He encouraged troops to maximise opportunities provided through Army training schools and divisional institutions to sharpen their skills and advance personal development.
Reaffirming his commitment to personnel welfare, the COAS commissioned a newly constructed soldiers’ canteen at the Division Headquarters as part of the visit.
The tour marks Lieutenant General Shaibu’s first official visit to 1 Division since assuming office.
