DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS ANNOUNCES 4TH EDITION OF CDS UNITY BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP (SOUTH-WEST ZONE)

The Defence Headquarters is pleased to announce the forthcoming 4th Edition of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Unity Basketball Championship (South-West Zone), scheduled to hold from 30 September to 5 October 2025 at the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

In a statement signed by the Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Defence Headquarters described the championship as part of the CDS’ non-kinetic strategy aimed at strengthening national security while promoting unity, discipline, and teamwork among Nigerian youths.

According to him, the power of sports will be harnessed to instill values of peace, resilience, and nation-building across communities.

The tournament will feature 12 elite male basketball teams drawn from the South-West and neighbouring states, including a military team.

Highlights of the week-long sporting fiesta will include veterans’ exhibition games, exciting halftime entertainment, and side attractions.

Winners and participants will be honoured with cash prizes, medals, trophies, and certificates, while individual recognitions such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Tournament Player will also be awarded.

The objectives of the championship include:

Promoting unity and peace through sports.

Positively engaging Nigerian youths and steering them away from social vices.

Strengthening civil-military relations through sportsmanship and fair play.Identifying and nurturing emerging basketball talents capable of representing Nigeria on the international stage.

Emphasising the vision of the initiative, the CDS noted:

> “The Unity Basketball Tournament is more than just a game; it is a platform to unite communities, inspire the youth, and reinforce the values of teamwork and discipline. Through non-kinetic approaches, we aim to promote a stronger, more united Nigeria.”

The grand finale and closing ceremony will feature a special veterans’ exhibition game, thrilling musical performances, and the official presentation of trophies, medals, and awards to outstanding athletes and teams.
