TROOPS FOIL MILITIA ATTACK, ARREST SUSPECT WITH WEAPON IN PLATEAU

Troops of the 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have successfully averted a planned militia attack on communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 4 September 2025, by the Media Information Officer of JTF OPEP, Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, the troops acted on a distress call indicating the movement of armed militias towards villages in Fann District.

According to the statement, the troops swiftly mobilised and laid an ambush at Kaskra in Ropp District, Barkin Ladi LGA, where they intercepted one of the suspected militias.

The suspect was arrested while in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 11 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested militia was mobilised from a nearby community with the intention of launching coordinated attacks on villages under Nding in Barkin Ladi,” Major Zhakom disclosed.

The statement further noted that the suspect is currently in custody undergoing interrogation, with a view to obtaining vital intelligence that will aid follow-up operations. Troops are also carrying out additional operations to intercept other militias allegedly mobilised for the planned attacks and to recover their weapons.

The Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE reassured residents of its determination to maintain law and order in Plateau State and other areas under its responsibility. It stressed that troops will continue to act decisively against criminal elements threatening peace and security in the region.

The military also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies, assuring that every effort will be made to safeguard lives and property.
