The Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) Nursery, Primary, and Secondary School in Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, came alive with colour and celebration as it marked its 2025 Speech and Prize-Giving Day a vibrant showcase of academic achievement, moral development, and the spirit of excellence.
In a moving address, the President of DEPOWA, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, hailed the occasion as a testament to the remarkable growth and resilience of the students. She expressed gratitude to God and lauded the school community for their dedication, noting that under her leadership, the institution had experienced a wave of transformation.
These strides include the establishment of state-of-the-art science laboratories, the installation of modern ICT equipment, the acquisition of a 100KVA generator to ensure uninterrupted learning, and the creation of a fully equipped culinary studio to broaden students’ practical life skills.
Delivering the keynote speech, renowned educationist and youth mentor, Dr. Lilian Iwu, inspired the students with a powerful message on purpose, perseverance, and mental fortitude. She urged them to embrace challenges as stepping stones, learn from failure, surround themselves with uplifting influences, and remain anchored to their goals.
Dr. Iwu also announced the introduction of a mental health support programme specifically tailored for the graduating SS3 class a proactive initiative designed to prepare them for life beyond secondary school.
Adding a heartfelt voice to the ceremony, the Head Boy of the school paid glowing tributes to the leadership of DEPOWA, the dedicated teachers, and the entire school community.
He praised the school not only for academic excellence but also for instilling discipline, fostering social development, and nurturing character.
“DEPOWA School,” he said, “has shaped us to be thinkers, doers, and future leaders.”
Earlier, in his welcome remarks, the Acting Commandant of DEPOWA School, Major Samuel Buzugbe, described the day as a significant academic milestone. He congratulated the students for their hard work and perseverance and advised the graduating class to stay focused, uphold discipline, and live out the values instilled in them.
He also extended appreciation to the DEPOWA President for her unwavering support and vision, and to the school’s PTA, education committee, teachers, and staff for their tireless efforts in building a nurturing learning environment.
The event drew the presence of distinguished guests and dignitaries, underscoring the unity among the wives of Nigeria’s uniformed services. Representing the President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Mrs. Lina Femiuri, was Mrs. Dorothy Tangona. The Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) President, Mrs. Ijeoma Vilesi Ogalla, was represented by Mrs. Lydia Levy.
Representing the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA) President, Architect Dr. Rukayat Abubakar, was Mrs. Elizabeth Rumeson, while Mrs. Funsho Olumo Ideu stood in for the President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi.Their collective presence was a powerful symbol of collaboration, shared values, and unwavering commitment to the academic and moral foundation of Nigeria’s future leaders.
The 2025 DEPOWA Speech and Prize-Giving Day was not just a celebration it was a declaration of hope, excellence, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
