In a bold and strategic push to align education with Nigeria’s climate action goals, the Ministry of Defence has launched a nationwide initiative to integrate environmental sustainability into the curriculum of all Armed Forces Primary and Secondary Schools.

The announcement was made in Kuje, Abuja during the official flag-off of the National Green School Program held at the Nigeria Navy Secondary School, an event that signalled a transformative shift in the nation’s defence education system.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the Director of Education, Mr. Marcus Kura, unveiled the policy framework and emphasized that Armed Forces schools must serve as models of eco-consciousness and innovation.

“This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national climate priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals. We’re not just teaching students to excel academically, but to lead the charge in environmental responsibility,” he said.

Ambassador Aduda also revealed that the Ministry has established a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation framework to track the progress and outcomes of the initiative in all military schools.

According to him, the framework will support data-driven improvements and promote transparency and accountability. The initiative, in collaboration with the National Green School Program, is designed to mainstream environmental education by immersing students in practical, solution-driven activities, ranging from tree planting and waste recycling to clean-up campaigns and the establishment of sustainability clubs.

Earlier, the Commandant of Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Commander J.O. Ibiang, described the initiative as a game-changer that transcends academics. He added that it is a call to awaken a generation that understands its responsibility to the environment.

The event was attended by a cross-section of dignitaries, including the Chief of Defence Staff represented by the Director of Education at Defence Headquarters, Commodore Adetunji, senior officers from the Ministry of Defence, military education officials, and representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Education.

Also present were school administrators, teachers, students, and members of the National Green School Program team.

The day featured a ceremonial tree planting exercise symbolizing growth and renewal, exhibitions of eco-friendly innovations by students including recycled art and solar-powered models and a collective pledge by participating schools to uphold environmental values, integrate green practices into school life, and serve as ambassadors for sustainability in their communities.

As the ceremony drew to a close, it became clear that the Ministry of Defence is not only preparing future military leaders but also nurturing a generation of climate champions ready to defend Nigeria’s environment with the same dedication and patriotism.
