The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep concern over the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, and St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, describing the incident as “heinous and unacceptable.”
In a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing operations aimed at rescuing the students and apprehending the perpetrators.
Responding to allegations by the Executive Governor of Kebbi State that terrorists attacked the school barely 30 minutes after troops were withdrawn, the Defence Headquarters noted that it is aware of the claim. It added that a standard procedural review is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding troop deployment and movement at the time of the incident.
The DHQ stressed that all operational decisions are guided by intelligence assessments and the broader security framework in the region. It further assured the public that if any lapse or operational gap is identified in the ongoing review, immediate corrective measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence.
Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding schools and vulnerable communities, the Defence Headquarters said it will continue to work closely with state governments, community leaders and other security agencies to enhance protection measures.
It assured Nigerians that the rescue operation remains a top priority, with troops actively pursuing credible intelligence to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
While acknowledging public concerns over rising insecurity in parts of the North, the DHQ reaffirmed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain steadfast in their resolve to restore peace and stability across all affected areas.
