By Bavoriat Clara

The Nigerian Army has refuted a misleading online publication claiming that bandits overran its troops and made away with six General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) and over 30,000 rounds of ammunition in Obanla, Kwara State.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, the report was described as entirely false and aimed at misinforming the public. He clarified that troops of 148 Battalion (Rear) currently engaged in clearance operations across Kogi and Kwara States have continued to record significant operational gains.

According to the statement, during a recent encounter, the troops established a strong blocking position along the Kwara–Ekiti border axis, where they successfully neutralized two armed bandits and recovered two brand-new AK-47 rifles.

Lieutenant Colonel Okoye emphasized that at no time were any Army positions overrun, nor were weapons or ammunition lost to criminal elements as alleged. He said the false publication was a deliberate fabrication intended to discredit the military and dampen the morale of gallant troops working tirelessly to safeguard lives and property.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to eliminating all forms of criminality and maintaining peace and stability across the country.

The statement further urged members of the public to disregard the false report and continue to support the military by providing credible and timely information to aid ongoing operations.

The Nigerian Army also assured that it will sustain the momentum of its operations until all criminal networks operating within Kogi, Kwara, and neighboring states are completely dismantled.
