The Headquarters of 82 Division, Nigerian Army, has dismissed allegations that troops of 245 Battalion are harassing and intimidating residents of Ochon Community in Obubra Local Government Area, amid a land dispute with Alesi Community in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State.

In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the Division described the reports as false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to discredit the efforts of troops working to maintain peace in the area.

According to the Army, troops of 245 Battalion are currently deployed for internal security operations to protect lives, safeguard infrastructure, and maintain public order in full compliance with constitutional provisions. The Division stressed that the troops’ presence in the area is solely to assist civil authorities in preserving peace.

Following renewed clashes between the two communities on 19 September 2025, troops under 82 Division responded swiftly to prevent further escalation and restore calm in the affected areas.

The Division further emphasized its neutrality, stating that it has no stake in the ownership, control, or settlement of land disputes between Alesi, Ochon, or any other communities. It reiterated that its mandate is strictly to maintain peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

While reassuring residents of Alesi and Ochon communities of its professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, the Army urged community leaders to embrace peaceful avenues for resolving disputes.

The statement also encouraged members of the public to disregard what it termed false reports aimed at undermining peace efforts and to continue providing credible information on security threats or misconduct by personnel through established reporting channels.
