NAF LEADS GREEN DEFENCE REVOLUTION WITH CNG POWER PUSH

By Bavoriat Clara

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a bold leap into the future of military innovation and environmental sustainability by adopting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology across its transport fleet. In a landmark move, its engineering subsidiary, Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL), has partnered with the Presidential Initiative on CNG to drive this transformative change.

The partnership was officially launched with the handover of three CNG-powered buses to the NAF. Beyond this initial deployment, 30 additional vehicles are slated for conversion from petrol and diesel to CNG—marking a strategic shift that will reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels, cut operational costs, and promote cleaner energy use.

To support the transition, 30 NAF personnel will undergo specialised training in vehicle conversion, maintenance, and repairs—equipping them with the skills to sustain the programme and contribute to its expansion.

More than just a military upgrade, this partnership positions AETSL to establish CNG conversion and refuelling centres in communities surrounding NAF bases, bringing affordable and environmentally friendly energy solutions to everyday Nigerians.

Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, hailed the initiative as a “strategic milestone” that enhances the Service’s adaptability and aligns military logistics with national energy goals. “This partnership optimises our resources and showcases the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative energy agenda,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, the Executive Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Barrister Ismael Ahmed, praised the NAF for embracing the shift to clean energy and reaffirmed the broader benefits of the transition. He also commended the Air Force’s consistent dedication to national security and innovation.

AETSL Managing Director, Air Vice Marshal Nnaemeka Ilo, described the project as a “clear demonstration of institutional readiness and forward thinking.” He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding CNG infrastructure and training, reinforcing the NAF’s dual mission: enhancing operational efficiency while promoting national energy security and sustainability.
