The University of Usmanu Danfodiyo, Sokoto, on Saturday, 6 September 2025, conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya (Rtd), former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), during its 50th anniversary and 42nd convocation ceremony.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Shittu, the University’s Governing Council bestowed the award in recognition of General Yahaya’s exceptional strategic leadership, intellectual depth, and transformative contributions to Nigeria’s security and defense during a critical period.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bashiru Garba, praised the former COAS as an exemplary Nigerian whose service strengthened the Nigerian Army. “The University is immensely proud to honor a distinguished leader whose enduring legacy in fostering a resilient military and advancing national security is unparalleled,” Professor Garba stated.
General Yahaya’s tenure was marked by significant achievements, including the elimination of the notorious Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau, the successful conduct of the 2023 general elections, and major gains against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and banditry in the North East and North West, leading to their technical defeat.
A grand reception followed the convocation, drawing dignitaries such as former COAS, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), Secretary to the Sokoto State Government, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Sifawa, representatives of the Sokoto State Government, members of the Nigerian Defence Academy 37th Regular Course, senior military officers (serving and retired), as well as family, friends, and well-wishers.
The event featured goodwill messages from the Sifawa Development Community and NDA 37th Regular Course, presentation of souvenirs, group photographs, and a celebratory luncheon in honour of the distinguished awardee.
