The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has been conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions to national security.
The conferment took place on Monday, May 4, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence headquarters, Ship House, in Abuja. The award acknowledges General Musa’s dedicated service and impactful role in strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Enderline Chukwu, the Institute explained that the ceremony was initially scheduled for December 2025 but was brought forward due to pressing official engagements, to ensure timely recognition of the Minister’s exceptional performance.
The Institute further noted that the honour is only the second of its kind in its history, underscoring the significance and rarity of the recognition.
Reacting to the development, the Ministry of Defence described the award as a testament to General Musa’s professionalism, commitment, and the collective efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and promoting national development. The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with professional bodies, including the NIS, in advancing national growth.
The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, one of Nigeria’s oldest professional organisations, traces its origin to 1934 as the Licensed Surveyors Association under the leadership of nationalist Herbert Heelas Macaulay. It later evolved into the Land Surveyors Association of Nigeria in 1960 before adopting its current name.
