Nigeria, US Deepen Security Ties Under 2026 Defence Roadmap

Nigeria and the United States have inaugurated Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral security cooperation and address evolving threats.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.The initiative, launched under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, is aimed at enhancing collaboration between both countries in tackling terrorism, insecurity and broader regional instability.

Speaking at the event, the head of the United States delegation, Mr. Cate Dave, said the working groups would support strategic planning and strengthen institutional capacity, noting that building strong defence institutions is critical to denying terrorists safe havens and improving counterterrorism operations.

On his part, the leader of the Nigerian delegation, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, emphasised that the partnership comes at a crucial time as Nigeria confronts complex and evolving security challenges. He stated that key priorities include strengthening the warfighting capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and improving operational responsiveness to restore lasting peace and stability.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring practical outcomes, accountability and sustained collaboration through the working groups, with a shared goal of enhancing security and promoting regional stability.
