Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled coordinated attacks by ISWAP fighters on multiple military locations in Borno State, including Njimtilo, Baga, Buratai and Damboa.
The attacks, which occurred in the early hours of March 16, 2026, were launched from different directions in what security sources described as a desperate attempt by the terrorists to overrun military positions and gain propaganda advantage.

According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, troops at Ajiri Cross near Njimtilo swiftly detected and engaged the attackers. He noted that the troops had anticipated the assault and adopted a proactive defensive posture, enabling them to decisively repel the terrorists through coordinated firepower and tactical manoeuvres, forcing them into a disorganised retreat with heavy casualties.
Similar attacks in Baga, Buratai and Damboa were also met with strong resistance, as troops, supported by close air support from the Air Component and Nigerian Army Aviation, overwhelmed the insurgents. The precision strikes disrupted the terrorists’ formations and inflicted further losses as they attempted to withdraw.
The statement added that several terrorists were neutralised during the encounters, including a key commander who led the attack in Buratai, while many others sustained injuries. Despite the intensity of the fighting, troops maintained control of all locations, although some equipment was damaged and a number of personnel sustained injuries.
Following the engagements, troops carried out exploitation operations around Baga, extending to Korochara and Garin Giwa. During the operations, a cache of weapons and equipment was recovered, including PKT machine guns, AK-47 rifles, ammunition, rocket-propelled grenade bombs and other items. Troops also destroyed motorcycles used by the terrorists and recovered several bodies, while others were reportedly buried in shallow graves by fleeing fighters.
Military authorities say the failed attacks reflect increasing pressure on terrorist groups in the North East, noting that recent operations have significantly limited their movement and disrupted their activities.
Operation HADIN KAI has reassured residents that all affected areas remain under firm military control and urged the public to remain vigilant and disregard misinformation aimed at undermining ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
