As African militaries continue to confront evolving security threats and the growing complexity of technology-driven warfare, the Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, has emphasized the need for stronger defence cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, particularly in the critical domain of cyber warfare.

Lieutenant General Mbatha made this known during a visit to the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, where he highlighted the increasing role of cyber operations, intelligence and technological innovation in modern military engagements.

He noted that contemporary conflicts are no longer confined to conventional battlefields, stressing that armed forces must continuously develop research capacity and specialized structures capable of countering emerging digital threats targeting national security systems and critical infrastructure.

The South African Army Chief commended the Nigerian Army for its forward-looking approach in establishing a dedicated cyber warfare command, describing the initiative as a strategic response to the changing character of warfare.

According to him, the development provides a useful framework for other African militaries seeking to strengthen their cyber defence capabilities, noting that the lessons and insights gained during the visit would be examined within South Africa’s strategic military planning and research environment.

Lieutenant General Mbatha further acknowledged the longstanding military relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, explaining that cooperation between both countries predates many formal agreements and has been sustained over the years through training exchanges, professional engagements and military education programmes involving personnel from both armed forces.

As part of his engagements in Nigeria, the South African Army Chief also visited the Nigerian Army Museum, where he received a detailed briefing on the historical development, operational milestones and institutional heritage of the Nigerian Army, including its contributions to national defence and international peacekeeping operations.

Earlier, the Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, Major General Kennedy Osemwegie, said the visit reflects the growing importance of strategic collaboration among African militaries in addressing emerging security challenges.

He noted that Nigeria and South Africa share a strong history of defence cooperation and expressed optimism that continued engagements would deepen collaboration in areas such as cyber security, research, training and technological innovation.

Major General Osemwegie added that enhanced defence partnerships among African nations remain essential for strengthening military institutions, promoting operational effectiveness and safeguarding the continent against evolving security threats.
