The Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro, has urged Commanding Officers of the Nigerian Army to return to their respective formations with renewed dedication to professional excellence and effective leadership.
Major General Okoro gave the charge at the closing ceremony of the First Commanding Officers’ Workshop 2026 held at the Army War College Nigeria, Wu Bassey Barracks, Abuja, after a five-day intensive training programme.
Addressing the participants, the Chief of Training noted that the workshop provided an important platform for professional reflection, experience sharing, and intellectual engagement on key aspects of military command. He explained that the lectures delivered during the programme were carefully designed to address the contemporary responsibilities and operational challenges confronting Commanding Officers.

According to him, discussions on command and leadership within Operation HADIN KAI offered valuable operational insights into leading troops in complex joint operational environments. He added that sessions focusing on the administration of troops in the field and the maintenance of equipment highlighted the critical role Commanding Officers play in sustaining combat readiness and operational effectiveness.
In his remarks, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, congratulated the participants for successfully completing the workshop. He described Commanding Officers as holding one of the most critical leadership roles in the Nigerian Army due to their direct interaction with troops under their command.
The commander further emphasised that the authority vested in Commanding Officers must be exercised responsibly, particularly in matters relating to discipline and trials. He also urged them to maintain objectivity and accuracy when preparing Performance Evaluation Reports on officers.
Highlights of the workshop included syndicate presentations, interactive sessions, presentation of certificates to participants, and the exchange of souvenirs.
