The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed a firm and enduring partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Taraba State Government as part of a renewed offensive against terrorism and other security threats across the state.
The declaration was made on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, when the COAS received the Executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency, Colonel Agbu Kefas (rtd), alongside federal lawmakers and members of the Executive Council of the International Institute for African Ispense Security and Governance, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the engagement, Lieutenant General Shaibu reiterated the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to its constitutional role of supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security nationwide. He noted that Taraba State remains strategically significant within Nigeria’s security framework due to its terrain and prevailing security dynamics.
The Army Chief commended Governor Kefas for what he described as decisive leadership and effective coordination with security agencies, stressing that the state government’s support—particularly the donation of land and provision of operational equipment—has served as a critical force multiplier, enhancing the effectiveness, reach and operational tempo of troops in the area.
Emphasising the importance of civil-military collaboration, the COAS stated that lasting peace can only be achieved through sustained partnership between the military and civil authorities. In this regard, he appealed for continued support from the Taraba State Government, specifically requesting assistance in providing stable electricity to the 20 Model Battalion in Sarti and the 23 Battalion. He explained that improved power supply would significantly boost operational efficiency, combat readiness and troop welfare.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also called for increased public sensitisation across Taraba State, urging residents to support security efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence. According to him, community cooperation remains a decisive factor in defeating terrorists and other criminal elements.
Responding, Governor Kefas described the visit as a demonstration of Taraba State’s unwavering solidarity with the Nigerian Army. He congratulated Lieutenant General Shaibu on his appointment as Chief of Army Staff and praised the professionalism, resilience and sacrifices of Army personnel, noting that their sustained presence has led to noticeable improvements in the state’s security situation.
The governor further lauded the strong inter-agency collaboration among security outfits operating in Taraba State and highlighted areas requiring reinforced military presence.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening support for the Nigerian Army, including the provision of accommodation for deployed troops, as both parties pledged to sustain a united and resolute front against insecurity.
