The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has urged officers of the Nigerian Army to remain innovative and committed to finding lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges, as well as prepare for the changing realities of modern warfare.
Lieutenant General Shaibu gave the charge while declaring open the First Bi-Annual Chief of Army Staff Conference 2026 in Abuja. The conference, which serves as a major platform for reviewing military operations and shaping future strategies of the Nigerian Army, brought together senior officers from formations, commands, training institutions, and other Army establishments across the country.
The Chief of Army Staff said the Nigerian Army must continue to improve its operational strategies and strengthen intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling insurgent and criminal networks nationwide.
He noted that discussions at the conference would focus on operational readiness, emerging security threats, training, logistics, and measures aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of troops across various theatres of operation.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also disclosed that recent joint operations carried out by Nigerian and United States forces led to the neutralisation of Abdul Bilal al-Munaki, described as the second-in-command of the Islamic State for Iraq and Syria, ISIS. He noted that the achievement represents a major breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
In his welcome remarks, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi, described the conference as timely and strategic, noting that it would help consolidate the operational gains recorded in various theatres of operation across the country.
The conference will also featured discussions on strategies for improving intelligence gathering, enhancing troop welfare, strengthening logistics support, and improving the Nigerian Army’s response to evolving security challenges in the remaining months of 2026.
The opening ceremony witnessed an emotional moment as the Chief of Army Staff presented insurance cheques to families of fallen soldiers and troops wounded in action. The gesture reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and support for families affected in the line of duty.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further paid tribute to officers and soldiers who lost their lives defending the nation, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices would never be forgotten. He also commended troops currently engaged in various operations for their courage, resilience, and professionalism in safeguarding the country.
The Army Chief stressed that troop welfare, morale, training, and empowerment remain key priorities under his “Soldier First Concept.” He added that the Nigerian Army is expanding its operational presence nationwide through the establishment of new formations, increased recruitment, and improved infrastructure aimed at strengthening operational effectiveness.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also disclosed that efforts are ongoing to improve welfare packages, healthcare services, and medical evacuation arrangements for wounded personnel both within and outside the country. He also highlighted the importance of civil-military cooperation, noting that public support remains vital in achieving lasting peace and security.
The COAS expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Armed Forces, especially in the provision of modern operational platforms and equipment to enhance military operations across the country.
