The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on troops of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to sustain the highest standards of discipline, commitment, and professionalism, stressing that their operations on the Plateau are critical to Nigeria’s national stability.

Lieutenant General Shaibu gave the charge on Monday, 19 January 2026, during an operational visit to Headquarters 3 Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos.

In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief, while addressing officers and soldiers, described discipline as the foundation of military service. He reminded personnel that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and anchored on the noble responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.

The COAS disclosed that he had received comprehensive briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division on both operational activities and welfare-related challenges facing the troops, noting that several of the most critical issues had already been addressed.

According to him, Army Headquarters is taking deliberate steps to provide the required combat enablers to ensure troops are adequately equipped to carry out their assigned tasks. He reaffirmed that troop welfare remains a top priority, assuring personnel of sustained efforts to create an enabling environment for effective service delivery.

Lieutenant General Shaibu also advised junior soldiers to uphold the chain of command and seek guidance from their superiors, stressing that officers have a responsibility to mentor subordinates toward professional growth and successful military careers.

He further charged troops to maintain optimal physical fitness and mental alertness, noting that structured measures have been instituted to prepare personnel for the rigours and demands of military operations.

Emphasising leadership at all levels, the COAS described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as the critical link between officers and soldiers, urging them to provide effective middle-level leadership and guidance to enhance operational efficiency.

On ongoing security operations in Plateau State, the Army Chief described the situation as unique, assuring troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) is being properly directed and supported to achieve its mandate.

He encouraged personnel to channel complaints and grievances through established military channels, assuring them of prompt attention and resolution.

Reaffirming the Army’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by its personnel, Lieutenant General Shaibu urged the troops to remain proud of their service and to discharge their duties with honour and professionalism in line with global best practices.

As part of his visit, the COAS also commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers and a separate block of residential accommodation for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, underscoring ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and living conditions of Nigerian Army personnel.
