Troops of the Nigerian Army under the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded a major operational success after eliminating terrorists during a decisive engagement at Kadam Forest in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The operation, carried out by troops of the Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Battalion 7 in conjunction with the 8 Division Strike Team, targeted a notorious terrorist network affiliated with the Lakurawa terrorist group. The troops acted on credible intelligence that over 100 terrorists had gathered in the forest to coordinate attacks and kidnapping activities against local communities, as well as move abducted victims to their hideouts.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, troops swiftly mobilised to intercept the terrorists, establishing contact with the group at about 12 noon, leading to a fierce and prolonged firefight.

During the encounter, the terrorists attempted a rear-flanking manoeuvre, but the troops responded with superior firepower, maintaining tactical dominance and neutralising the threat. Follow-up exploitation operations confirmed that three terrorists were killed, while several others were believed to have sustained gunshot wounds as they fled into the forest.

The troops also recovered one PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, 350 rounds of PKT ammunition, 111 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, three magazines, two communication radios, three motorcycles and a mobile phone.

The statement added that follow-on operations are ongoing to track fleeing terrorists, confirm additional casualties and recover more equipment, while aggressive patrols continue across the area to prevent the regrouping of terrorist elements.
