In a bold step to deepen the connection between Nigeria and its citizens abroad, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to diaspora engagement, while unveiling a groundbreaking housing initiative tailored to Nigerians living overseas.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu made this known during the 2025 National Diaspora Day (NDD) celebration held in Abuja on Thursday. The event brought together key government functionaries, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society actors, and Nigerians from across the globe to deliberate on diaspora inclusion in national development.
As a highlight of the event, Senator Akume launched the Home & Abroad Housing Platform, an ambitious government-backed initiative aimed at eliminating the long-standing challenges Nigerians in the diaspora face when trying to acquire property back home.
The platform is expected to enhance transparency, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in cross-border real estate investments.
In her opening address, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), praised the over 20 million Nigerians abroad for their resilience and immense contributions to national progress.
She highlighted their role in driving foreign remittances, global diplomacy, innovation, and knowledge transfer.
Also speaking at the event, Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, underscored the urgency of strengthening institutional frameworks to harness the full potential of the Nigerian diaspora for socio-economic transformation.
The 2025 National Diaspora Day reaffirmed the government’s stance that Nigerians abroad are not just expatriates they are essential partners in shaping a prosperous future for the nation.
