SENEGALESE DEFENCE MINISTER COMMENDS ECOWAS FORCE IN GUINEA-BISSAU

The Senegalese Minister of Defence, General Birame Diop (Rtd), has commended the performance of the Economic Community of West African States Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), following a visit to the Force Headquarters in Bissau City on Thursday, 19 September 2025.

In a statement issued by the Mission’s Public Information Officer, Major Yahaya Nasir Kabara, General Diop was said to have been accompanied by the Guinean Minister of Defence, Mr. Dionysio Cabi, the Senegalese Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau, Ambassador Musa, and other senior officials. They were warmly received by the Force Commander, Brigadier General Edward Odinya Ojabo, along with staff officers and contingent commanders.

After receiving a detailed briefing on the mission’s operations, achievements, and challenges, General Diop praised the Force Commander for what he described as a comprehensive and enlightening presentation. He expressed satisfaction with the Force’s achievements so far, while urging them to remain steadfast in discipline, teamwork, and mutual respect.

The Defence Minister stressed the importance of embracing diversity as a source of strength, while also encouraging tolerance and solidarity within the ranks. He further emphasized the need to respect host nation authorities and collaborate effectively with local security agencies.

General Diop reminded the troops of the hardships endured by the people of Guinea-Bissau in the past and urged them to avoid any actions that could aggravate their suffering. He underscored the importance of safeguarding the image and reputation of ECOWAS and its contributing member states at all times.
