The Federal Government has intensified security operations across Nigeria’s North Central region following recent attacks in Kwara State that left about 75 villagers dead.

In a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government announced the launch of a renewed offensive, code-named Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at protecting vulnerable communities and restoring public confidence. The operation involves the deployment of military personnel, police officers, and national forest guard units to reinforce security presence in affected areas.

According to the statement, the security forces are being supported with enhanced intelligence capabilities and rapid-response mechanisms under an expanded security mandate approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 26, 2026, when he declared a state of emergency on national security.

President Tinubu condemned the Kwara attacks as “beastly and heartless,” describing them as part of a desperate campaign by terrorists targeting soft civilian populations. He directed security agencies to bring the full weight of the state to bear on all those responsible for threatening peace and stability.

As part of the measures, security has been strengthened around places of worship and other vulnerable locations, with increased visibility of personnel, especially during religious gatherings. The Federal Government said the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with local communities and faith leaders.

In addition, the Nigeria Police Force has carried out a nationwide redeployment of officers previously assigned to VIP escort duties, returning them to core community policing roles. The move is expected to boost security presence in Kwara, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger states, and the Federal Capital Territory.

President Tinubu reaffirmed that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations would remain Nigerian-led and sovereignty-driven, while welcoming international cooperation particularly in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance where it aligns with the country’s national interests.
