NYSC CONDEMNS ASSAULT ON CORPS MEMBER BY VIGILANTE OPERATIVES IN ANAMBRA

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has condemned in strong terms the alleged assault on one of its Corps Members in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing the incident as “unacceptable and condemnable.

”According to preliminary findings, a group of operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group reportedly stormed a Corps Lodge in Oba on allegations that the facility was being used for illegal activities.

The claims, however, have not been substantiated.During the forced operation, the vigilante operatives demanded that all occupants of the lodge submit themselves for a search. In the process, Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626), who was visiting the lodge at the time, was physically assaulted.

The incident sparked concern among residents and other Corps Members in the area, prompting NYSC Management to immediately escalate the matter to the police for investigation and further necessary actions.

In a statement, NYSC Management reassured Corps Members nationwide of its unwavering commitment to their safety and welfare, warning that it would not tolerate any individual or group undermining the security and dignity of its members.

> “Management wishes to restate its strong commitment to the welfare and security of Corps Members nationwide, and would not condone any individual or group of persons that undermines their safety for whatsoever reason,” the statement emphasized.

The Scheme further urged members of host communities, local authorities, and security agencies to take responsibility in ensuring the safety of Corps Members deployed to their areas for national service.It also called on the Anambra State Government and relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served and that those behind the incident are held accountable.

The NYSC noted that Corps Members play a vital role in grassroots development and nation-building, hence their protection must remain a collective duty.
