The Nigerian Army has alerted the general public to the increasing proliferation of fake social media accounts falsely claiming to represent or be associated with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army categorically stated that the Chief of Army Staff does not operate or maintain any official social media account on any platform.
The statement noted that the fraudulent accounts are being operated by unscrupulous individuals with the intent to deceive members of the public, solicit funds, and spread misinformation in the name of the COAS and the Nigerian Army.
Members of the public were therefore advised to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and avoid engaging with, responding to, or sharing content from such fake accounts. The Army urged citizens to disregard any messages or requests purportedly originating from the COAS on social media.
The Nigerian Army further disclosed that it is taking all necessary measures to identify and apprehend those behind the fake accounts, with a view to prosecuting them in accordance with existing laws.
The Army reassured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens and defending the nation’s territorial integrity, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
