The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has donated 20 brand-new motorcycles to women in Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto State, as part of efforts to enhance the economic well-being of families of military personnel.

The donation, aimed at boosting income-generating activities and promoting self-reliance within the barracks community, was announced in a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba.

Handing over the motorcycles to the Magajiya of Giginya Cantonment at the NAOWA Leisure Park, the GOC stated that the initiative reflects the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families. He explained that the gesture forms a key component of the Barracks Women Empowerment Scheme designed to support women engaged in petty trading and other small-scale businesses.

According to him, the motorcycles will provide critical mobility, enabling beneficiaries to access markets more easily, manage logistics efficiently and expand their businesses within and beyond the cantonment. He further noted that the initiative aligns with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff to boost the morale and well-being of troops and their dependents through impactful empowerment programmes.

The GOC also commended the Magajiya and other women leaders in the cantonment for their continuous support to troops and their contributions to peace and harmony within the barracks community.

Receiving the motorcycles on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Magajiya of Giginya Cantonment, Hajiya Amina Adamu, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a transformative intervention. She lauded the GOC’s visionary leadership and assured that the motorcycles would be fairly distributed and properly maintained.

The event attracted formation commanders, senior officers, the Chairperson of the 8 Division Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), and families of personnel.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic handover of keys, presentation of souvenirs and group photographs, marking a significant step towards improved economic independence for women in Giginya Cantonment.
