Nigerian Army Dismisses Alleged Mutiny Threats as False, Reaffirms Commitment to Troop Welfare

By Bavoriat Clara

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.

In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said the online report published by Sahara Reporters was based on anonymous and unverifiable sources and was aimed at undermining public confidence and national security.

Colonel Anele stated that at no time has there been any threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army, stressing that mutiny is a grave offence under military law and completely alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of its personnel. She reaffirmed that officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

According to the statement, the allegations do not reflect the views or conduct of Nigerian Army personnel, who are trained to channel grievances through established military procedures rather than public or unofficial platforms.

The Army further clarified that promotion increments constitute only one component of military remuneration and should not be misrepresented as total earnings. It explained that military pay includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary depending on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.

The statement noted that the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, is implementing structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, improved operational allowances, enhanced accommodation, medical services and insurance packages for troops and their families. Issues relating to allowances, it added, are continually reviewed within approved government frameworks.

Colonel Anele also disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff, upon assuming office, initiated engagements with relevant authorities on troop welfare, which are already yielding positive results.

Contrary to claims of neglect, the Army подчеркed that the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly in response to evolving security challenges.

Reaffirming its professionalism, the Nigerian Army said it remains a cohesive and disciplined force focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. It warned that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.

The Army urged members of the public to disregard the unfounded report and rely on official communication channels for accurate information concerning the Armed Forces, especially the Nigerian Army.
