The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion followed by a fire outbreak at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, assuring the public that there were no casualties.
According to a statement by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the incident occurred in the early hours of 14 August 2025, when a localized explosion was recorded inside one of the storage facilities of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
The blast triggered a small fire, which was promptly tackled by troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment in partnership with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.
Their swift intervention prevented the flames from spreading, containing the damage to the affected building and a few stored materials. No lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained.
A detailed assessment is ongoing to ascertain the extent of material loss, while a joint investigation with relevant agencies is underway to determine the cause of the incident and prevent any recurrence.
The Army has urged residents of Ilese and surrounding communities to remain calm, reiterating its commitment to the safety of personnel, neighbouring communities, and all Nigerians.
