The 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army has confirmed awareness of a tragic incident involving one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving with 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, who was suspected to have killed his wife before taking his own life.
In a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, the unfortunate incident occurred on 11 October 2025 at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, leaving residents of the barracks in deep shock and disbelief.
According to preliminary findings, Lance Corporal Femi was on official duty within the cantonment but had requested permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before returning to post. Moments later, both he and his wife were found lifeless in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa Cantonment.
The remains of the deceased have since been preserved, while a comprehensive investigation has commenced to determine the exact circumstances that led to the heartbreaking incident.
The Nigerian Army expressed deep regret over the tragic development and extended its condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased, praying for the repose of their souls.
Meanwhile, the Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, has assured the public that the incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the findings will be communicated transparently.
He further appealed for public understanding and cooperation as the Army works to unravel the circumstances surrounding the event and to implement necessary measures to prevent future occurrences.
