By Bavoriat Clara

The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening defence and military cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by authorised representatives of both governments, with Nigeria represented by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia represented by the Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Matawalle described the MoU as a significant milestone in bilateral relations, noting that it had been under consideration for some time. He said its conclusion would further strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture and enhance the capacity of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Under the agreement, the MoU will remain in force for an initial period of five years, with provision for review and renewal for a similar term. Either party may terminate the agreement by giving at least three months’ written notice through diplomatic channels.

The MoU provides a framework for cooperation in key defence and military areas, including training, joint military exercises, technical assistance, intelligence sharing, logistics, and other mutually agreed activities.

The agreement is expected to deliver significant benefits to Nigeria, particularly in capacity building through expanded opportunities for professional military education, specialised courses, and training exchanges. It is also aimed at improving operational effectiveness by enhancing interoperability and readiness through joint exercises and shared doctrine.

In addition, the MoU will strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and intelligence sharing to support efforts against violent extremism and organised crime.

The Ministry of Defence has welcomed the agreement, describing it as a strategic and practical instrument that will contribute to Nigeria’s long-term security, stability, and defence modernisation.
