The Nigerian Army has witnessed another historic transition of leadership as Major General Chinedu Nnebeife officially assumed duty as the 47th General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan. He took over from Major General Obinna Onubogu on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, following his appointment by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations of 2 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, the handing and taking over ceremony took place at the Division’s Headquarters, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, in a colourful and well-attended event that marked the seamless transfer of command.
Speaking during the ceremony, Major General Nnebeife expressed profound gratitude to God and to the Chief of Army Staff for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the elite Division. He paid glowing tributes to his predecessor, Major General Onubogu, for his exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions, pledging to build on the legacies already established.
The new GOC also appealed to officers, soldiers, and personnel of the Division to remain steadfast, disciplined, and committed to the call of duty, stressing that collective effort was key to sustaining the operational successes of the Division. He assured troops that his leadership would focus on consolidating achievements, enhancing welfare, and strengthening operational readiness.
In his farewell remarks, Major General Obinna Onubogu thanked Almighty God for the grace to successfully serve as the GOC of 2 Division. He appreciated the Chief of Army Staff for the confidence reposed in him during his tenure and expressed gratitude to the officers and soldiers for their unwavering support. He urged them to extend the same loyalty and cooperation to his successor in order to ensure continuity of excellence within the Division.
Highlights of the event included the formal signing of the handing and taking over notes, decoration of the new GOC with the 2 Division insignia, the outgoing GOC’s farewell parade and address to troops, and finally, the symbolic handing over of the Division’s command flag to Major General Nnebeife. The ceremony climaxed with the hoisting of the new flag, signifying the dawn of a new era under his leadership.
With the assumption of office by Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, the 2 Division Nigerian Army, renowned for its historic role in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, begins yet another chapter of dedication, discipline, and service to the nation.
