The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has acknowledged reports alleging civilian casualties following air operations conducted on Sunday, 25 January 2026, in Kurigi Village, Kontokoro District of Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Service expressed deep concern over the reported loss of lives and injuries. The NAF described the incident as grave and assured Nigerians that the protection of non-combatants remains a core principle guiding all its operations.

Air Commodore Ejodame noted that over the past year, the Nigerian Air Force has consistently implemented its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response – Action Plan (CHMR-AP), which integrates civilian protection measures into every phase of air operations. He explained that the plan is supported by enhanced training, strengthened operational procedures, and safeguards designed to minimise harm to innocent civilians.

In line with this commitment, the NAF has activated a Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team to carry out an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the reported incident in Kurigi Village. According to the statement, the investigation will be guided by the principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency.

The Nigerian Air Force reassured the public of its readiness to take responsibility where necessary, implement corrective measures, and further improve its operational practices to safeguard innocent lives. It also reaffirmed its resolve to continue defending the nation with professionalism, restraint, and respect for the trust reposed in it by the Nigerian people.
