The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has successfully concluded a one-day Executive Course on the Blue Economy for media practitioners. The course was held on at the IMION Auditorium in Apapa, Lagos.
Delivering his remarks, the Director General of IMION, Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia (Retired), urged participants to put into practice the key takeaways from the training.
He emphasized the need for media professionals to return to their various platforms with a deeper understanding of the Blue Economy, articulate its significance effectively, navigate the maritime sector’s regulatory framework, and apply their new knowledge to produce journalism that is accurate, impactful, and solution-oriented.
Rear Admiral Udofia expressed gratitude to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Admiralty Medal, for his continued support to the Institute, which made the hosting of the course possible.
The course featured insightful presentations by Rear Admiral Francis Dominic Akpan (Retired), and Mrs. Funke Agbor, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, both renowned experts in maritime affairs.
Participants also engaged in syndicate and interactive sessions where they shared experiences and posed important questions relevant to their work.
A major highlight of the course was a guided tour of Nigerian Navy Ship UNITY, where participants were exposed to the day-to-day operations onboard a naval ship, providing them with firsthand insights into naval procedures and maritime defence operations.
The executive course attracted participants from the Nigerian Navy as well as media professionals working within the maritime sector. It was designed to build the capacity of journalists to interpret and communicate complex maritime issues in a manner that is compelling, responsible, and geared toward sustainable solutions. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to strengthen the nexus between public awareness, evidence-based policy making, and environmentally responsible maritime practices.
