The Honourable Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to promoting sporting activities across the country following his conferment with the prestigious “Ambassador of Fair Play” award by the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations for the Director, Information and Public Relations, the assurance came during a courtesy visit by the Association to the Ministry. The award was received on behalf of the Minister by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwa, alongside principal officers of the Ministry.

Speaking while receiving the honour, Mr. Pheelangwa described General Musa as a passionate sports enthusiast who strongly believes in the power of sports to foster national peace and unity.

He noted that the Minister actively participates in both indoor and outdoor sporting activities, including golf, and would be delighted by the recognition while continuing to support the development of sports nationwide.

Earlier, the delegation from the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Defence.

He explained that the partnership would focus on elevating sports development in the Federal Capital Territory to levels capable of delivering significant socio-economic benefits, comparable to outcomes seen in developed economies.

Dogara added that the Association is committed to using sports as a tool to enhance economic independence, empower youths, and reduce social unrest and criminality, thereby contributing to sustainable peace in the country.

Representatives of sports bodies—including golf, baseball/softball, gymnastics and basketball, also appealed for the rehabilitation of barracks sporting facilities, noting that many promising talents are discovered within military communities.

Also present at the event was the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Maduka, along with senior officials of the Ministry.
