Abuja – The Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has issued a flood alert following predictions by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) indicating that several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with communities in Niger, Nasarawa, and Kaduna States, are likely to experience heavy rainfall and possible flooding between July 31 and August 4, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nkechi Isa, at least 11 locations within the FCT are projected to be affected by the forecasted downpour.
The areas include Asokoro, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Damagaza, Garki 1 and 2, Guzape, Wuse 1 and 2, Gwarinpa, Nyanya, the Central Business District (CBD), and Kubwa.In response to the forecast, the Acting Director General of FEMD, Engineer Abdulrahman Mohammed, has placed the department’s Search and Rescue Team on red alert as a precautionary measure to reduce potential loss of life and property.
Engineer Abdulrahman urged residents in the identified high-risk areas to exercise extreme caution. “Please do not attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads. Wait for the water to recede or take alternative routes.
Also, ensure that your drainages are cleared to allow free flow of water,” he advised.He further assured the public that FEMD is actively monitoring water levels and working closely with relevant agencies to mitigate the impact of any potential flooding across the territory.
Meanwhile, the flood warning also extends to states bordering the FCT. In Niger State, communities at high risk include Suleja, Mashegu, Sarkin Pawa, and Rijau. In Nasarawa State, Mararaba, Gidan Rogo, Wamba, Agima, Rukubi, and Odogbo have been identified as vulnerable. Similarly, in Kaduna State, the areas of Zaria, Jaji, Kauru, Kachia, and Buruku are expected to experience heavy flooding.
Authorities are urging residents in these areas to stay alert, follow safety advisories, and report any emergencies to the nearest disaster management agency.
