The Federal Government has paid tribute to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, at a National Memorial Service held in Abuja on Sunday, with a call for Nigerians to uphold the values he stood for.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, fnim, CON, led the government delegation at the service, describing the former President as a disciplined and principled leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s development remain significant.
In a statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the SGF noted that President Buhari’s legacy is reflected in his efforts to strengthen national security, expand social protection programmes, and drive institutional reforms, including the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act.
Akume stated, “Though not without imperfections, President Buhari served with conviction and commitment. He fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith.
His impact on national development will remain a reference point in Nigeria’s governance history.
”He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in recognition of the former President’s contributions to nation-building.
“This is not just a symbolic gesture. It is a tribute to leadership defined by integrity and national service, and it sends a strong message to future generations,” he said.
The service was attended by the Representative of the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate Majority Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi; members of the National Assembly; Federal Ministers; senior government officials; former Secretaries to the Government of the Federation; retired Permanent Secretaries; and other dignitaries.
The event formed part of official activities commemorating the life and service of the late President.
