The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to improve emergency preparedness, disaster management, and rescue operations in the Federal Capital Territory.

This assurance was given by the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, when he received the new FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Felix Theman, and his management team during a courtesy visit to the FEMD Corporate Office in Abuja.

In a statement signed by FEMD’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Nkechi Isa, Engr. Abdulrahman emphasized that the mandates of both organizations are closely aligned, noting that while the FRSC focuses on highway safety and accident prevention, FEMD’s role as the FCT’s State Emergency Management Agency also covers rescue, prevention, and mitigation of disasters.

According to him:> “Rescue, prevention, and mitigation of disasters is a shared responsibility involving multiple stakeholders, with the FRSC and FEMD as key players. It is clear we are sister agencies, and we must be seen working together. Our personnel often meet in the field during rescue missions, and where necessary, even outside road crashes, we want to be able to call on you for support.”

He further stressed that improved synergy between both agencies would not only save lives during emergencies but also enhance overall disaster response within the FCT.

Earlier, Corps Commander Felix Theman explained that his visit was intended to consolidate the cordial working relationship that has existed between the FRSC and FEMD.

Theman, highlighted the enormous responsibilities of ensuring safety in the FCT, which is home to over four million residents.

He pointed out challenges such as indiscipline from adjoining states, the effects of global warming, climate change, and poverty, which, according to him, continue to exacerbate emergencies, particularly in developing countries.

> “All stakeholders must work together to provide succor to residents of the FCT. The task is huge, but through collaboration, we can deliver better service to our people,” he said.

Theman further assured that the FRSC would continue to provide FEMD with the necessary operational support, especially in rescue and public safety initiatives.

The meeting was also attended by the FRSC FCT Head of Operations, the Head of Public Education, and senior officers from the Department of Staff Public Education, underscoring the agency’s commitment to working closely with FEMD.
