The Federal Government has reaffirmed that the new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, as earlier scheduled, dismissing speculations about a possible suspension or alteration of the reform process.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, made this known while addressing public concerns surrounding the recently enacted tax reforms. He stated that the new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, alongside the remaining acts billed to begin on January 1, 2026, will be implemented fully as planned.

According to the President, the reforms represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal framework for Nigeria. He clarified that the tax laws are not intended to increase the tax burden on citizens, but to drive structural reforms, promote harmonisation within the tax system, and protect human dignity while strengthening the social contract between the government and the people.

President Tinubu called on all stakeholders to support the implementation phase of the reforms, noting that the process has now firmly entered the delivery stage. He acknowledged the ongoing public discourse regarding alleged changes to certain provisions of the new tax laws but maintained that no substantial issue has been identified that would justify halting or disrupting the reform process.

He stressed that trust in governance is built over time through sound and consistent decision-making rather than premature or reactive actions. The President further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process and the sanctity of enacted laws.

The Presidency also assured Nigerians of its readiness to work closely with the National Assembly to ensure the prompt resolution of any issues that may arise during implementation.

President Tinubu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest, with the goal of delivering a tax system that promotes economic prosperity, fairness, and shared responsibility across the country.
