In a dramatic night-time rescue, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) pulled two persons from a burning Peugeot J5 bus following a horrific crash along the Kubwa-Suleja expressway, directly opposite Niger Barracks.

The tragic incident, which occurred at approximately 9:21 pm on Wednesday, involved a Peugeot J5 bus heavily laden with bags of groundnuts. According to the Head of Operations, Search and Rescue at FEMD, Mr. Monday Adie, the bus rammed into a heavy-duty vehicle ahead of it, igniting a blaze that engulfed the vehicle within seconds.

Tragically, the driver of the ill-fated J5 bus sustained fatal burns and was declared dead at the scene. His charred remains, Adie confirmed, have since been released to his family for burial.

Miraculously, one passenger survived the inferno and was rushed to Asokoro General Hospital for emergency treatment. However, he was later discharged upon the request of his family.

The intense rescue effort—which involved the combined efforts of the FCT Fire Service, the Nigerian Army, and the FCT Police Command—lasted over four hours, concluding around 1:30 am the following morning.

Reacting to the incident, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engineer Abdulrahman Mohammed, urged motorists to exercise utmost caution, especially while driving at night. He stressed the critical importance of maintaining vehicles in excellent condition to prevent such tragedies.

He also encouraged FCT residents to utilise the 112 emergency toll-free number during any form of disaster or emergency.

The charred wreck of the bus has since been cleared from the highway, but the blackened tarmac remains a stark reminder of the night’s tragic events.
