Abuja, Nigeria — 13th July 2025
Nigeria is in mourning following the reported death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 83. The news of his death was confirmed by family sources in Daura, Katsina State, and has since been met with an outpouring of condolences from leaders and citizens across the nation and beyond.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, and previously as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political and military history. His leadership, spanning over four decades in different capacities, marked a significant era in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the family statement, the former president died peacefully after a brief illness, although official medical details are yet to be disclosed.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing, describing him as “a patriot whose commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress was unwavering.” A statement from the Presidency noted that national flags would be flown at half-mast, and arrangements are underway for a state burial.

International leaders have also begun to send in their tributes. President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, referred to Buhari as “a continental statesman who stood firmly for peace and regional cooperation.”
A Legacy of Service
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, rising to the rank of Major General. He became Head of State in December 1983 after a military coup that ousted the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari. His tenure was characterized by a tough stance on corruption and indiscipline, though also criticized for human rights abuses and press repression.
He returned to democratic politics and ran for president several times before finally being elected in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in May 2023.
His administration focused on anti-corruption, infrastructure development, and the fight against insurgency, though it was not without controversy regarding economic hardship, security lapses, and alleged suppression of dissent.
National Tribute and Funeral Arrangements
The Federal Government is expected to announce a series of national tributes and activities in honor of the late statesman. Sources within the Presidency confirmed that a special interfaith national memorial service will be held in Abuja, while his remains will be laid to rest in Daura in accordance with Islamic rites.
Nigerians from all walks of life have taken to social media to pay tribute, recalling Buhari’s impact on the nation’s political landscape. From stern disciplinarian to elder statesman, Muhammadu Buhari’s legacy will continue to spark conversation and reflection in the years to come.
