The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed an ordnance explosion at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) facility in Kaduna, which occurred on Saturday morning, September 20, 2025. The incident claimed one life and left several personnel injured.
Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, in an official statement, explained that the explosion happened during the destruction of expired ordnance materials. The items involved included Ammonia Nitrates, Primer Caps, Propellants, and other hazardous substances.
According to the DHQ, the injured personnel have been evacuated and are receiving treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Brigadier General Gusau reassured the public that the situation is under control, stressing that there is no cause for panic. He added that residents of the surrounding community had been assured of their safety and reiterated that DICON maintains strict adherence to operational safety standards.
The Defence Headquarters further disclosed that a detailed investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the explosion and to prevent a recurrence.
