The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, CON, has undertaken an on-the-spot visit to the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) facility in Kaduna, following the ordnance explosion that occurred on 20 September 2025.
In a statement issued by the Principal Superintendent of Press, Pat Ituke, on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations, the Minister expressed deep concern over the incident. He reassured the public that the situation is under control and described the explosion as an unfortunate accident.
During his visit, Dr. Matawalle was briefed by officials on the immediate circumstances and emergency measures taken. Preliminary findings revealed that the explosion happened during the controlled destruction of expired and hazardous materials, including ammonium nitrate, primer caps, propellants, and other substances.
The Minister emphasized that DICON continues to operate in strict compliance with established safety standards. He further directed that a comprehensive investigation be conducted to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to provide recommendations that will help forestall any future occurrence.
“Appropriate support will be extended to the affected personnel and their families,” the Minister assured.
