The Federal Government has reaffirmed January 15 as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, a day dedicated to honouring serving personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) while commemorating those who lost their lives in defence of the country.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Major General Samaila Uba, the military explained that the day recognises the sacrifices made to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity, as well as the lives and property of citizens.
According to the statement, the annual event is preceded by a week-long programme of activities, which culminates in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony held on January 15.
The Defence Headquarters noted that the occasion was formerly known as Armed Forces Remembrance Day, but was renamed Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day to reflect its dual purpose of celebrating serving personnel while also honouring fallen heroes.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria also appealed to the media to adopt the revised name in all future reports, while appreciating journalists for their continued support in efforts to combat insecurity and expressing readiness for stronger collaboration going forward.
