The President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa, has called for greater unity, compassion, and collaboration in tackling the global challenge of cancer.
Speaking during her goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the International Cancer Week (ICW) 2025, held on 14 October 2025 at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre & Suites (NACCAS), Maitama, Abuja, Mrs. Musa described cancer as one of humanity’s most devastating health crises that demands collective effort and renewed commitment from all stakeholders.
In her words, “Cancer knows no borders, respects no rules, and discriminates against no one. It has, directly or indirectly, touched the lives of countless individuals within our communities and across the globe. This is why we must stand together—with compassion, awareness, and action—to make a difference.”
She emphasized that DEPOWA’s participation in the International Cancer Week reflects its unwavering dedication to the welfare and well-being of military and police families—not only in matters of national security but also in issues affecting their health and quality of life. According to her, the Association continues to serve as a strong pillar of support for families navigating the emotional and financial challenges of cancer by offering compassion, resources, and a community of care.
Mrs. Musa commended researchers, health professionals, and caregivers for their tireless service and selflessness, noting that their efforts bring hope to millions. She equally celebrated cancer survivors for their courage, resilience, and unyielding spirit, describing them as “true warriors whose stories inspire hope and renewal.”
She reaffirmed DEPOWA’s resolve to continue collaborating with relevant stakeholders—government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector—to promote awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and equitable access to treatment for all, regardless of social or economic background.
The International Cancer Week 2025, themed “Redefining the Future of Cancer: Prevention, Access, and Equity for All,” brought together experts, advocates, and policymakers to discuss innovative strategies to strengthen global and national responses to cancer.
Highlights of the opening ceremony included goodwill messages from dignitaries, keynote presentations by health experts, exhibitions by advocacy groups, as well as the exchange of souvenirs and group photographs to commemorate the event.
