Defence Minister Calls for National Unity at Army WASA 2025 in Abuja

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has identified national unity as a decisive solution to Nigeria’s contemporary security challenges, commending the Nigerian Army for demonstrating cohesion, professionalism and patriotism in the discharge of its duties.

The Minister who was represented at the  by the Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, retired Major General Henry Wesley at the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025, held at the Army Headquarters Garrison Parade Ground, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja. 

General Musa described the Nigerian Army as a microcosm of the Nigerian state, where ethnic, cultural and religious diversity converge under a single national identity. He stressed that as Nigeria continues to confront complex and evolving security threats, unity remains the nation’s most potent strategic asset in preserving peace and stability.

According to him, the Army’s sustained commitment to discipline, professionalism and collective purpose strengthens national integration and proves that diversity, when properly harnessed, is a source of strength rather than division. He commended the Service for its unwavering efforts in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, supporting civil authorities, upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens across all regions.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who was the Chief Host, described WASA as more than a cultural celebration. He said the event serves as a deliberate morale-building and unifying platform anchored on the Robust Administration pillar of his Command Philosophy.

Lieutenant General Shaibu explained that promoting esprit de corps, inclusiveness and a shared identity among personnel directly enhances operational effectiveness. He noted that deliberate welfare policies, institutional reforms and strengthened support systems are being implemented to entrench the Soldier First Culture, ensuring that troops remain motivated, combat-ready and resilient, while their families receive adequate support.

The Army Chief reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s resolve to collaborate closely with sister services and other security agencies to consolidate operational gains and restore lasting peace nationwide. He expressed appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his strategic leadership and continued support to the Armed Forces, as well as to the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, described WASA as an important platform for strengthening bonds among officers, soldiers and their families. He said the celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through traditional dances and performances fosters mutual respect, shared identity and national cohesion, which are critical in overcoming security challenges.

Major General Dangana also disclosed that Army Headquarters Departments and Commands recorded notable operational, administrative and logistics achievements in 2025, alongside sustained training activities in line with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff and the Service’s operational priorities. As the Army moves into 2026, he assured the COAS of personnel’s renewed dedication, discipline and commitment to national service.

The colourful ceremony featured traditional cultural displays, the beating of the retreat and the ceremonial lighting of the bonfire, symbolising unity, continuity and collective resolve in the defence of Nigeria.
