The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and their families to enable them effectively carry out their constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the nation.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, made this known during an inter-denominational church service held on Sunday, 11 January 2026, in Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

In a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, Queeneth Iheoma-Hart (CIO), the Minister emphasized that the wellbeing of military personnel and their families remains a top priority of the Federal Government.

Delivering the vote of thanks, General Musa paid glowing tribute to the commitment and sacrifices of officers, soldiers, ratings and airmen, as well as their families, including those who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation and those still serving.

“We honour with deep reverence the brave men and women who paid the supreme price in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” he said.

The Minister also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and continued efforts at improving the welfare of the Armed Forces. He urged Nigerians to support the government in tackling the nation’s security challenges, including terrorism, kidnapping and banditry, expressing confidence that the country would overcome them.

Earlier in his sermon, the Most Reverend Uche Okafor of the Presbyterian Church, Abuja, who preached from 2 Chronicles 32:5–8 under the theme “Gratitude, Encouragement and Spiritual Security,” lauded the Nigerian military for their sacrifices and dedication to national service. He noted that soldiers confront danger when others flee and urged them not to be discouraged.

Rev. Okafor called on Nigerians to continue to encourage and support the Armed Forces, stressing that they serve not only the nation but also God and humanity. He prayed for divine protection, strength and courage for the military and assured Nigerians that the country would overcome its challenges. He also admonished the Armed Forces to remain neutral and patriotic as the 2027 general elections approach.
